Calli Thomson

Calli Thomson graduated from UCT with a degree in classical piano and went on to study jazz . Always in demand as a musical director, pianist and keyboard player, Calli has made her mark in the SA entertainment world in theatre and band work. She has accompanied renowned cabaret artists Danielle Pascal, Mynie Grove, Rory Roetenberg, Anton Stoltz, Kim Kallie and Judy Page.

Calli has played solo piano at 5 star hotels in Cape Town such as the Palm Court at the Cape Sun, the Mount Nelson, the Victoria and Alfred in the Waterfront, the Lord Charles Somerset in Somerset West and the prestigious Grande Roche in Paarl, and other prominent function venues such as Kelvin Grove in Newlands and wine estates Spier, Zevenwacht and Morgenhof. She completed a five-month solo piano contract in the renowned John Jackson restaurant at the Peninsula hotel in Sea Point. Overseas travel is one of her passions and she played a solo piano set nightly for 3 months at the Gazeira Sheraton hotel on the Nile in Cairo, Egypt.

Calli has taught in the jazz department at UCT and lectured at City Varsity Multimedia College in Cape Town. Calli and husband guitarist singer from Durban, Barry Thomson, toured nationally on the Barnyard theatre circuit in Roll Over Beethoven, Rock me Amadeus, La Vida, Forever Young and Johnny Plays Guitar before relocating to Durban in 2005. Calli has musically directed and performed in many Gateway Barnyard shows: Fab Four, Rock Around the Clock, Those Were the Days, Your Momma Don’t Dance, Hollywood Rocks, Rocking all Over the World, Big Band Magic, Viva Las Vegas, Broadway Rocks, Route 66 and LM Radio. She teamed up with seasoned jazz saxophonist Jeff Judge to produce Big Band Magic,a traditional swing big band consisting of Durban’s finest jazz musicians – this 20-piece ensemble is also available for bookings. Calli has appeared with the KZNPO in a tribute to the music of Queen at the Playhouse. At the Elizabeth Sneddon theatre she musically directed Guys and Dolls and performed in the Vita-award winning show The Guitar That Rocked the World and Young Performers Productions The Wiz and Annie. She backed international guitarist Philip Walker in the Blues festival at Wilson’s Wharf in 2008 and 2009.


In 2005, Calli settled in Durban with husband guitarist and singer, Barry Thomson, and continues her career in musical theatre and music of all genres. Since 2005 she has musically directed and performed in many shows at Gateway Barnyard theatre, some shows at the Elizabeth Sneddon theatre and with the KZNPO  in a tribute to the music of Queen at the Playhouse, and has played solo piano at the Beverly Hills hotel in Umhlanga, Mount Edgecombe Estate and the Durban Country Club.

Calli is actively involved in a number of projects and bands that perform a variety of styles of music for corporate and private events and functions. Including Saxadelic, Platform Jazz, Big Band Magic as well as solo piano performance.

With an established and active network of musicians, performers and collaborators within the Durban and South African music scene and industry Calli is well positioned to organise, direct and collaborate with the musicians required to put together a Live Band to meet your requirements.
